Prof. Yongsoon Eun visited CDSL

In the first half of this year, professor Yongsoon Eun, from Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology, has visited CDSL. He held a seminar on “Unknown Input Observer (UIO)”, where he delivered mathematical and intuitive explanation of unknown input observers.

Unknown input observer is an observer that estimates the state from the output without knowledge of the input. Professor Eun introduced two conditions, on the rank and detectability of input and output matrices, for design of UIO.

He mentioned that there hasn’t been no literature clearly explaining the meaning of such conditions, and shared his analysis of those conditions in this seminar. This observer can be the countermeasure of zero-dynamics attack, where the attack signal is injected in the input while achieving stealthiness from the output. Since several students in CDSL research zero-dynamics attack, this seminar led to active discussions among students.

CDSL and professor Eun have been participating on a funded project “Resilient Cyber-Physical Systems“, and produced a number of research results through this collaboration, regarding attack and detection measures on cyber-physical systems and resilient state estimation. More information on professor Eun and his research can be found in his homepage.
