Mr. Melle de Vent, from the University of Groningen in Netherlands, joined CDSL in August 2018 as a visiting student, and the visit is till January 2019. Working with his supervisors, Muñoz Arias, Ph. D and professor Bayu Jayawardhana, as a master’s candidate, his research area includes analysis and control of smart systems. (As an example, his master thesis focused on the distributed optimal control of smart grids.)
As the last part of his master study, with our team project commissioned by Samsung Advanced Institute in CDSL, he is now trying to develop an algorithm for motion/trajectory planning problem for autonomous vehicles. For their objective of the algorithm being applicable for real-life usage, they are struggling to reduce the computational complexity while taking into account the requirements of human passengers. They are having a regular meeting at least once a week to share the ideas by small presentations or discuss about some new articles related to, such as, reinforcement learning.
It seems sometimes they are even starting to share the culture of Korea! He occasionally joins to eat out after the day’s work to try Korean foods, and now he finds that he really likes Kimchi and Bibim-naengmyeon. Including the remaining time in SNU, we really hope his long visit to CDSL be a nice memory as well as a rewarding experience for his research!
