The International Workshop on Sparse and Geometric Representations in Systems and Control was held at Centum hotel, Busan on August 21 and 22 as a satellite workshop ahead of the IFAC World Congress. The program featured 18 speakers and covered the use of data, energy, geometry, and network structure in systems and control.
On the first day, Prof. Henk van Waarde presented a local learning rule for nonlinear resistive circuits and conditions for its convergence, while Prof. Donggun Lee proposed less conservative safety filters for uncertain outdoor systems. Dr. Joowon Lee showed how input and output data yield linear models with different stability properties, and Mr. Christopher Allan Strong introduced data-driven safe sets from trajectories without an explicit dynamics model. Prof. Cyrus Mostajeran discussed criteria for positive definite kernels on curved symmetric spaces, while Prof. SooJean Han combined model structure and learning for reliable motion planning under uncertainty. Dr. Aneel Tanwani discussed Kalman filters with Bayesian weights to estimate states under unknown parameters and randomly timed observations, and Dr. Rosane Ushirobira introduced neural network approaches to learn Lyapunov functions and stabilizing controllers.
On the second day, Prof. Alberto Padoan presented behavioral systems theory as a framework for dynamic optimization, while Dr. Félix Miranda-Villatoro presented a nonsmooth PD controller based on energy shaping. Prof. Christian Grussler introduced a representation-theoretic approach to variation-bounding systems, and Dr. Andrey Polyakov presented homogeneous control systems on cones. Dr. Denis Efimov discussed periodic convergence in nonlinear time-delay systems, and Prof. Thomas Berger gave an introduction to funnel model predictive control. The final talks, by Prof. Michelle S. Chong and Dr. Pelin Şekercioğlu, addressed the confidentiality of control systems and synchronization in signed networked systems.
The workshop was closely related to CDSL’s research on data-driven control, multi-agent systems, secure control, adaptive control, and moment-based methods. CDSL members Mr. Sangyoon Lee and Mr. Hyungjo Byun also presented their work on moment transfer operators and distributed adaptive control. We sincerely thank all speakers for sharing their research and for the valuable discussions throughout the workshop.
