Prof. Hyo-Sung Ahn visited CDSL

Prof. Hyo-Sung Ahn in GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology) visited CDSL at 22nd January 2019 . Prof. Ahn is a distinguished scholar in the field of control theory, especially in iterative learning control and multi-agent formation control. Interestingly, he earned B. S. and M. S. degrees in astronomy.

CDSL required a seminar from prof. Ahn so that he talked about “Opinion dynamics on multiple interdependent topics: Modeling and analysis”.

His talk consists of three parts: modeling of opinion dynamics, cluster consensus and the effect of a stubborn agent, and signed matrix for analysis of opinion dynamics. In the first part, he took an example of an opinion dynamics to describe the basic rule of the modeling. The basic rule is that someone’s opinion about one topic is interdependent on the “similarity of the opinions about another topic,” i.e. “intimacy between them”. Therefore, in the second part, the consensus on each topic based on the above modeling is considered. He described a sufficient and necessary condition for the consensus on the graph which does not have spanning trees of positive definite weights. The case of the existence of a stubborn agent is also suggested. In the last part, the signed matrix (extension from the scalar elements in signed Laplacian to the matrix case) is explained to understand the modeling of an opinion dynamics concretely.

After his talk, many audience members asked questions. Donggil Lee was curious about the optimal design of the null space of the system matrix. Usually, the system matrix is a Laplacian matrix for consensus, but it can be changed for the purpose of designers. Junsoo Kim also asked about the multi-layer illustration. And, Jiyeon Nam discussed with him about the signed Laplacian for biased consensus.
